ABOUT THE PRINT: George Lockwood of Santa Inez, California was commissioned to do the design from a competition of 19 applicants. Mr. Lockwood is the only artist to have done two Alaska stamp designs; he created harlequin ducks for the 1994 stamp. He developed the design concept from photos and research material. Mr. Lockwood has produced a simple but vivid portrait of these stunning eiders on the water, highlighting the unique shape and bold plumage of the males in contrast to the rich brown females'. Lockwood's popular design earned the Best Stamp of the Year by Linn's Stamp News. King eiders breed in northeastern Alaska and across the Canadian arctic. They migrate in large numbers along the north and west coasts to winter in the Bering Sea and western Gulf of Alaska.
