Wildlife Management Planning

The Division of Wildlife Conservation conducts planning on two levels. In its strategic planning, the division looks at broad issues it is likely to face in the future and develops practical and responsible organizational and policy approaches for dealing with them. In conservation and management planning, species- or area-specific wildlife and habitat management issues are addressed, often with collaborative public and interagency processes.

The division has increased its efforts to involve the public in wildlife management decision-making in response to growing public interest and the increasing social complexity of wildlife management issues. Public involvement can range from seeking public input on division proposals, to collaborative processes with high levels of public participation. The more complex or controversial the wildlife issues, the greater the need for public participation. Decisions in which all stakeholders have a voice are more socially and politically durable than are those made unilaterally by the department.
